1. Edgars Gauracs (FC Sheriff vs Olimpia, November 2010). Ever since the likes of Dion Dublin and Gary Crosby the sneak attack goal has been around in football. The essential ingredients to pulling off the feat require that an alert centre-forward come up against a dozy goalkeeper, while the audience act as the witnesses to the pantomime he’s behind you moment.

And so it was last weekend in Moldova as the stunt was administered to perfection by little known Latvian striker Edgars Gauracs.

2. Melville Celtic B vs Ballymahon FC B, November 2010. Few people will have ever heard of the Combined Counties Football League, otherwise known at the ninth tier of the English football league, but last weekend a freak goal of epic proportions thrusted the league into the global consciousness.

3. Andrew Hogg own goal (Valletta vs Hibernians, April 2010). Nothing quite like receiving the pass inside the box, turning, and then rifling it into the top corner. Except when you're the goalkeeper. And you hit it into your own goal.

4. Mike Elwood own goal (Waterford United vs Mervue United, July 2010). If Hogg’s og was the dumbest, Elwood’s og is one of the unluckiest. Playing in the Eire first division last season, the Mervue midfielder scored the most freakish own goal ever when he was unwittingly pole-axed when his centre-half tried to hoof the ball clear only for his embarrassment to multiple tenfold when his face-planted block saw the ball loop 40-yards into his own net.

5. Ogmundur Olafsson og (Thor vs HK, July 2010). Whilst the eyes of the world were transfixed on the World Cup final this summer, on the same day a crazy own goal was scored in the Icelandic second division. An estimated 350 spectators turned up to the 1. Deild match, and they were rewarded with some incredible horrible keeping by HK goalie Olafsson after just two minutes of the contest.

6. Ali Benmaamer’s penalty, Khalid Askri’s screw-up (MAS Fes vs FAR Rabat, September 2010). It has been dubbed the craziest penalty in the history of football. Rabat goalie Khalid Askri thought he had saved a crucial spot-kick in a Moroccan Cup when he pushed Benmaamer’s penalty away and turned to soak up the adulation of his fans. Incredibly though the ball hadn’t stopped moving and, with his back turned, Askri instantly became a laughing stock as the ball spun into the unguarded net.

7. Uwe Mohrle (Augsburg vs Union Berlin, October 2010). The Augsburg centre half never, ever considered putting the ball into the back of the net when he collected possession several feet away from the halfway line. Instead his gameplan was simple route one stuff; lob the ball upfield and hope that one of his strikers could control his hoofed clearance. But with a large slice of luck Mohrle bagged one of the longest-range goals of the season so far.

8. Milan Jovanovic (Spartak Nalchik vs Rubin Kazan, August 2010). Kazan keeper Sergei Ryzhikov will still be having nightmares about this goal. Back in the summer the Rubin goalie made a terrible error of judgment as he failed to calculate the bounce of Jovanovic’s over-hit punt from over 70-yards. The result was the longest goal of the season so-far.

9. Zahari Sirakov (Amkar Perm vs Spartak Nalchik, July 2010). Nalchik keeper Otto Fredrikson was left receiving death stares from his teammates after the keeper managed to allow Zahari Sirakov’s crazy shot on the angle to end up in the back of the net. The incident has since been dubbed the “Jabulani” goal.

10. Luis Nani (Manchester United vs Tottenham, October 2010). United were already 1-up when Nani had a penalty appeal turned down in the closing minutes after bursting into the Tottenham penalty area. The Portugal winger was then seen handling the ball while lying on the turf, which lead Spurs goalie Heurelho Gomes to believe that the ref had blown for a free-kick against the Red Devils. That assumption however proved to be farcically misplaced. Accordingly, as Gomes lined up the supposed dead-ball Nani burst in front of the Brazilian and prodded the ball into an empty net. After much debate Mark Clattenburg gave a goal to Manchester United.
